High Blood Pressure During Pregnancy
In case you have high blood pressure during pregnancy before 20 weeks of your pregnancy.
There is a tendency that it is a pre-existing condition and it going to increase after your delivery.
But If your high blood pressure experience started after the 20 weeks it is called gestational hypertension.
And this will usually go after your delivery.
The particular reason for this high blood pressure during pregnancy is not really understood.
Majority of the experts says it occurred because of the development of the placenta and the blood vessels within.
It is because of this situation that high blood pressure during pregnancy will result in a condition called pre-eclampsia.
Which may seriously affect your BABY Development if left diagnosed and untreated.
Different between chronic HBP and Gestational hypertension
If you have high blood pressure during pregnancy before your week 20 it is called chronic high blood pressure.
And it is a Long Term effect that affected most pregnant women.
But If your blood pressure raised after 20 weeks of your pregnancy it is Gestational hypertension.
This is a temporary high blood pressure during pregnancy that usually goes after delivery.
How can high blood pressure affect pregnancy
Woman with soft or mild high blood pressure during pregnancy can have a normal pregnancy.
Blood pressure commonly reduces a little early in pregnancy and later in 3rd-trimester return to pre-pregnancy level.
The more serious the high blood pressure during pregnancy is the greater the problems.
The risk is much higher for women who had high blood pressure which causes by another Medical situation or condition like diabetics, kidney disease, or heart problems.
High blood pressure during pregnancy risk include the following:
(i). Preterm Birth:- It seeds that the BABY is not developing or a kind of complications occur, it may be necessary for the baby to be delivered before the normal time.
The research shows that 62-70% of women who had high blood pressure during pregnancy get their baby delivered early.
It was also shown that averagely 28% of women with high blood pressure during pregnancy have there baby before 37 weeks of their pregnancy.
(ii). Preeclampsia: – supposing your high blood pressure progress or develop after 20 weeks of the pregnancy and protein shows in your urine.
Or assuming there are symptoms that particular Organ is not functioning well (like liver), this could indicate a serious Medical condition known as Preeclampsia.
Preeclampsia which occurs after you have developed high blood pressure is called “Superimposed preeclampsia”.
13-40% of women with high blood pressure develop this Medical condition called Superimposed Preeclampsia during pregnancy.
(iii). Intrauterine growth restriction:- high blood pressure during pregnancy can have the insight that your baby is not getting necessary nutrients and this affecting its growth.
Because of this, you can have a baby that is Smaller than usual.
The seriousness of your high blood pressure during pregnancy or whether you have other diseases such as anemia or kidney disease will determine the risk of your baby been born small.
(iv). Placenta abruption: – this is the situation whereby, either part or all of the placenta removed from the uterine wall before the baby is born.
Placenta abruption has many degrees and mostly in dangerous cases.
The baby may not be able to breathe very well and needs to be born quickly.
If the high blood pressure during pregnancy is mild, the risk of placental abruption will be low.
This is affecting 1 out of 100.
But If the high blood pressure during pregnancy is serious or severe, the risk of having placenta abruption is rise to Let say 5 to 10%.
(v). Cesarean Birth:- Women who get high blood pressure during pregnancy have a higher risk of delivering their baby through Cesarean Section( CS).
And this particular surgery can lead to many complications.
Averagely 4 in 10 of women with high blood pressure during pregnancy have birth by CS.
(vi). Future Cardiovascular diseases:- if you have Preeclampsia this may increase your risk of having heart and blood vessels disease.
Your risk of future cardiovascular disease is higher if you have Preeclampsia more than one time.
Or you have premature birth due to your high blood pressure during pregnancy.
What To Do To Have A Healthy Pregnancy
Ensure you go for all your prenatal appointment so that your doctor can monitor Both you and your baby and discover any problem as quick as possible.
Always talk to your doctor to know what types of drugs are good for you.
Always avoid self-medication If you have high blood pressure during pregnancy.
Also, try and maintain a healthy weight and diets, talk to your doctor to know How much weight you needed.
Ask your doctor if it is good and safe to engage in exercise.
Or your doctor will recommend any activities that you can engage that will make you active.
